What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state that we all encounter in our lives. You transition into this state when you find yourself engrossed in a great movie and experience visceral responses in the body and emotional changes in the mind. Or when you find yourself off in a daydream and then click back into the moment and wonder "where did I just drift off to!" Have you ever experienced reading a page in a book and then realize you have to go back and read it again because your mind was off somewhere else? We transition through the state of hypnosis when we go to sleep at night. These are examples of naturally occurring hypnosis. There really is no question about IF you can be hypnotized. The only question is can we use hypnosis as a tool to therapeutically help you.
Hypnosis is what I call a consent state. You must want to be hypnotized and allow it. When the mind is quieted and the emotions calmed we can achieve a state of mind in which the critical thinking can relax and thoughts and ideas that are in line with what you know is in your best interest can be accepted into the unconscious mind and the old learned conditioning can begin to change. Remember, the old programs were learned at one time, we are just using a process to learn new programs that are aligned with creating your highest quality of life. Fortunately this is something the mind is well equipped to do. Hypnosis is simply the process that facilitates that learning. That is why it has been used in one form or another for arguably a few thousand years or more. It is also why I have been able to help people help themselves for over 25 years in my clinical practice constituting many many thousands of hours of clinical experience.
One of the keys to success is the skill of the Hypnotherapist in preparing the critical thought process BEFORE the hypnotic tools are used. Just like in construction, you must pour the foundation before you build the house. This is a concept many Hypnotherapists will have no real training in and little concept of. It then becomes important to tailor the words and feelings to match the particular suggestibility of the client. It is important to find a Hypnotherapist that truly understands this process and has had appropriate training to help you achieve the best outcome. Unfortunately many Hypnotherapists have little training and inadequate understanding of the intricacies of this work and because there are no uniform standards of training many are simply using rudimentary inductions and reading scripts. Caveat Emptor!
